Local SEO: how to rank in your own city
TL;DR
Local SEO means getting into search results for queries with "near me" and a city name. It works as a set of three parts: map listings, pages for local queries, and a matching address and name everywhere you are mentioned. For a local business it is the cheapest source of leads.

A large part of the searches for local businesses has the same shape: a service plus a city, a service plus a district, or simply "near me". A dental clinic in Yunusabad, a car service near me, water delivery Tashkent. The winner in those searches is not whoever has the prettier website, but whoever search considers to be close to the person searching. It is a discipline of its own, with its own rules.
How is local SEO different from regular SEO?
Regular SEO answers the question "who fits the query best". Local SEO adds a second one: "which of them is nearby".
That leads to two practical consequences. First: results differ from person to person, and checking your own rankings from your own device is pointless - search knows where you are and adjusts. Second: local results run on factors that regular results do not have - map listings, address, reviews, distance.
That is why a business with a single address can outrank large sites with a strong domain for searches in its own district, even though its site is weaker on every classic metric. Geography outweighs it.

Where does local SEO start?
Not with the website, but with map listings. For a local business they are the way into search results, and they often bring more inquiries than the site itself.
The minimum: a listing on Google, a listing on Yandex. Both are free, both are created by the owner. Fill in everything - category, address, hours, phone, website link, photos. A listing with empty fields is shown less than a complete one, and this is the only place in SEO where the result depends on nothing but your own thoroughness.
Which of the two systems matters more in your case depends on the country and the audience. I cover that in Google or Yandex: Where to Promote a Site in Uzbekistan.
A Google listing is a big topic with its own rules and pitfalls: Google Business Profile: the listing that brings clients.
What should be on the website itself?
The website handles what a listing cannot do: explain the services, show prices, take an inquiry. For local search, specific things on it matter.
Address and phone as text, not as an image, and on every page - usually in the footer. A machine has to be able to read them.
A contact page with a map and a clear description of how to get there.
The city in headings and copy wherever it is natural. Not "services" but "services in Tashkent", without forcing the language.
Organization markup with address, opening hours and coordinates. It is the same information in machine-readable form.
Matching data everywhere. The name, address and phone on the site, in listings and in directories must be written the same way. Discrepancies weaken the signal.
The last point is the one broken most often: one number on the site, another in the listing, yet another in an old directory. To search, that looks like three different businesses.
Do you need separate pages for districts and cities?
If you work in one location - no, one good contact page is enough.
Separate pages are justified in two cases: you have several physical locations, or you travel to clients and the geography genuinely differs. Then a page per district or city makes sense - but only if it has something of its own: its own address, its own photos, its own specifics.
What you must not do is clone the same page, swapping only the district name. It is an old scheme, search recognizes it, and it ends worse than having no such pages at all.
What should you do about reviews?
Reviews on listings are one of the few local ranking factors you influence directly, and yet almost nobody collects them systematically.
The approach that works is simple: ask. After the service is delivered, in person or by message, with a link straight to the review form. Do not invent them and do not buy them - both get detected, and the consequences cost more than the benefit.
It is worth replying to every review, including the bad ones. A calm public reply to a complaint builds trust more than a dozen words of praise, because it is read by those who are still hesitating.
Does language affect local search results?
It does, and more than people expect. Someone searching in Uzbek gets different results - and the competition there is noticeably lower.
For a local business this is the cheapest growth point: the same service, the same city, but a query in another language and less of a fight for it. There is one condition - the version has to be real, with separate URLs and a proper translation, not a switcher on top of Russian text: Does Your Site Need an Uzbek Version.
What does it cost and what should you do first?
The basic part is free and done by the owner: map listings filled in with data, and the same address and phone everywhere. It costs time, not money, and gives the most at the start.
The website part - markup, pages, structure - is built in during development: a landing page from $190, a multipage website from $490. Extended promotion for search demand is a separate service. What the price is made of: How much does a website cost in Tashkent.
The order of steps: listings first, then address and phone as text on the site with markup, then collecting reviews, and only after that pages for local queries, if you need them.

A Google listing is a free way into local search results and onto the map. Claimed by the owner, it requires address verification and works as well as it is filled in: category, photos, hours, reviews. For a local business it is usually the first source of inquiries, ahead of the website.
