AI for small business: where to start without a budget
TL;DR
You do not need a separate implementation budget to start with AI. You need clear tasks and the habit of checking results. I cover where a small business should start: which tasks to give AI, how to write prompts, where AI gets it wrong, what data to keep from it and when you need a bot.

AI is not a toy just for large companies. I work with AI tools all the time myself, and I see that the value comes not from the tools themselves but from how they are used. A small business does not need to begin with integrations and development: you can start with the tasks that are already on your desk.
Why does a small business need AI if there is no budget?
To take routine work off the owner. If you write replies to clients, social media texts, product descriptions and emails to suppliers yourself, AI will not do it all for you, but it will give you a draft that is quicker to fix than writing from a blank page. Without a budget means without development and implementation: you start with a ready-made AI assistant and your own tasks. Paying for custom solutions makes sense later, when it becomes clear what exactly works.
Which tasks should you start with when using AI?
Those where a mistake is cheap and a draft is useful:
Answers to typical questions - ready-made replies for chat: prices, address, how to book. You check them and keep them.
Product and service descriptions - AI gives a base, you add the details that only you know.
Posts and newsletters - ideas and drafts that you bring round to your own voice.
Emails and documents - a polite refusal, a payment reminder, a proposal template.
Review analysis - which complaints keep coming up and what gets praised.

How do you write a prompt so that AI helps?
AI answers as well as you have explained the task. In a prompt it is worth stating:
Who you are - what the business does and who it serves.
What you need - the type of text or reply and where it will be used.
Tone - "formal" address, short, no bureaucratic jargon.
An example - a sample you like, or a text you wrote before.
Constraints - what not to write: promises, figures that do not exist, other companies' names.
If the result is not right, do not start over - refine it: "shorter", "simpler", "no exclamation marks". That way you get to the style you need faster.
Where does AI get things wrong in a small business?
AI writes confidently even when it is wrong. The risky areas:
Facts and figures - AI can make up a price, a deadline or a feature that does not exist.
Laws and rules - the answer sounds convincing but may be wrong for your country.
Promises to clients - guarantees and discounts you never gave.
Template tone - a text without your details sounds faceless.
The rule is simple: AI prepares, you check and answer for the result. I work the same way - I direct, check and answer for it. The same logic applies to websites: AI builds websites for free - why pay a developer?
What data should you not give to AI?
Anything you would not send to a stranger:
Clients' personal data - names with phone numbers, addresses, entire conversations.
Passwords and access - to email, the bank, the website admin panel.
Finances - statements, bank details, internal figures.
Other people's documents - partners' contracts and anything you were told in confidence.
If you need to go through conversations or reviews, remove names and contacts before you paste the text.
When do you need an AI bot for clients?
When there are many questions, they repeat, and answering them by hand is already hard. An AI-based bot can answer typical questions and take enquiries, but that is already development and a separate budget. You do not need to start with it: begin by collecting answers to frequent questions through a ready-made assistant - that will be the basis for the bot. How can you tell that AI is actually helping?
Look at the work, not at the impression:
Less routine - drafts appear faster than when you wrote them yourself.
Quality has not dropped - clients do not complain about template replies, and there are no errors in the facts.
You check rather than rewrite - if every reply has to be redone completely, the task was chosen badly.
If AI does not save you effort, change the task rather than giving up on the tool.
How do you bring in AI without unnecessary spending?
Pick a task that repeats and takes up your energy, and try to handle it with an AI assistant. Keep a file of prompts and examples that worked - it is your base, which you will not have to invent again. When it becomes clear what works, you can think about automation: a bot, a connection to the website, taking enquiries. And a website is worth preparing for being read by AI search engines too - more on this in What GEO Is and Why Your Site Should Show Up in ChatGPT.

Yes: Google penalises not AI but useless text produced in bulk for the sake of rankings. A model works well as a draft and as an editor, but it does not know the facts about your business and invents them. Publishing generated text without checking and without your data is risky.

An AI tool will generate a page in 20 minutes - true, and I use AI every day myself. But a generated shell and a website that brings leads are different things. You pay not for the code, but for knowing what a site needs to sell, and for being accountable for the result.
