Website or Instagram: what should a business choose

TL;DR

This is not an either/or choice. Instagram attracts attention, a website turns it into leads and stays yours. A profile can be lost to a block. If you run paid ads, send them to a website: a profile has no single goal, a landing page does.

What is the real choice: a website or Instagram?

The question almost always sounds like an either/or: either run Instagram, or build a website. That is a false fork. A website and Instagram solve different problems, and strong businesses use both - just at different stages of the funnel. The right question is not «what to choose» but «where are you losing money right now».

What does Instagram do, and what does a website do?

Instagram is an attention platform. It is good for showing your product, building an audience, sparking emotion, warming up a follower. People come there to scroll the feed, not to buy right now.

A website is a decision platform. People land here when they are already ready to compare, work through the terms and leave a request. On a website you control everything: the structure, the order of the sections, the form, what it costs. This is where cold interest turns into a concrete action. In short: Instagram attracts, a website converts. One without the other works at half strength.

Can you run a business on Instagram alone?

Honestly - yes, sometimes you can. If you are just starting out, sell through direct messages and the volume of requests is small, you do not need a separate website yet. I am not going to argue otherwise: there is no point in spending money just to tick a box. But the moment you launch paid ads or want to be found in search, a website stops being optional. Let me go through both cases.

Why should ads lead to a website, not to a profile?

This is where most of the money is lost. A business pays for clicks in Instagram or Yandex Direct and sends them to a profile - and the traffic dissolves. A person lands in the feed, gets distracted, leaves, forgets.

Ads work when a click has one goal and one action. A landing page is exactly that goal: a specific offer, one screen, one form. You pay for the click either way, the only difference is whether it brings you a lead or not. A social media profile was not built for this, a landing page was. That is why the first website for many people is not a «big corporate site» but a simple landing page for ads, from $250.

What happens if the account gets blocked?

Instagram does not belong to you. An account can be lost to a block, a hack, a complaint or a change of rules - and the entire follower base you spent years building goes with it. Appeals to support drag on for weeks with no guarantee that you get it back.

A website is your asset. The domain, the texts, the database of leads, the analytics - all of it is under your control and does not depend on the mood of a platform. On top of that, a website is indexed in Google and Yandex: you get found by people who are searching for your product right now. Instagram has nothing like that - there are no search results there for a commercial query.

So what should you choose?

The very short version: an early start with sales in direct messages - you stay on Instagram; you launch ads or want traffic from search - you need a website; you want to grow systematically - you run both, where Instagram warms up and the website sells. The choice is not between a website and Instagram. The choice is between «I pay for clicks that lead nowhere» and «I pay for clicks that turn into leads».

I build these websites at INSITE - one person plus AI, so the price is honest and decisions are made right away, without a chain of approvals. A landing page for ads - from $250, a multi-page website - from $600. I name the timeline against my real workload and fix it at the start. If you are not sure what exactly you need, write to me - I will go through your situation and tell you straight whether you need a website at all.
