Website or Telegram mini app: what to choose for a business
TL;DR
A website and a Telegram mini app solve similar tasks but work in different conditions. A website is opened via a link and found in search, a mini app lives inside the messenger. I show when you need a website, when a mini app fits, how to combine them and where to start.

A mini app in Telegram looks like a website, but it opens right in the messenger. Hence the question: maybe a website is no longer needed? The answer depends on where clients look for you and how they communicate with you. Below - how to choose.
How does a website differ from a mini app?
A website opens via a link from anywhere: from search, ads, a business card, a chat. It can be found by a person who has not heard of you yet.
A mini app works inside Telegram and opens through a bot or a link in the messenger. It is convenient for those who are already in touch with you, but a person looking for a service in search will come to a website, not to a mini app.
I described what a mini app is and how it works in the article Telegram mini-app: what it is and which business needs one.
When does a business need a website?
A website is the foundation if new clients do not know about you yet:
Search and AI models - a person is looking for a service and should find you.
Advertising - an ad needs a page for its link to lead to.
Trust - a website with case studies, reviews and contacts shows that the company is real.
Getting to know you - a person wants to calmly study the services and prices before writing.
When does a mini app fit?
A mini app works well where clients already communicate with you in Telegram and come back again:
Repeat orders - a cafe, delivery, a shop with its own customers.
Catalog or menu - it is convenient to choose products without leaving the messenger.
Appointments - clients of a salon or studio choose a service and a specialist.
Your own audience - you have a channel or chat where your clients are gathered.
If you have no clients in the messenger yet, the mini app will have no users to open it. For orders in the messenger there is also a simpler option - a bot, I wrote about it in the article Order bot for a shop: how it works and who needs one.
What is more convenient for the client?
Convenience depends on the situation. For a person who is looking for a service and does not know you yet, a website is more familiar: it opens via a link and does not require installing anything. For a client who has already ordered and chats with you in Telegram, a mini app is more convenient: there is no need to go anywhere.
So the question is not what is better in general, but who your client is and at what stage they are.
Can you combine a website and a mini app?
You can, and for a business with repeat sales this is a working option:
Website - for new clients: search, ads, trust, getting to know the services.
Mini app - for those who have already bought: repeat orders, catalog, appointments.
Linking - the website has a link to the mini app, and the mini app has a link to the website with details.
This way the formats do what they are better at.
Where do you start if the budget is limited?
If new clients find you through search, ads or recommendations with a link - start with a website. Without it, you are harder to find and check.
If clients are already in your Telegram channel or chat and order repeatedly - a mini app can bring benefit earlier than a website. But even then a website will come in handy when you need new clients.
What should you consider before launching a mini app?
Before ordering a mini app, check:
Audience - whether you have clients in Telegram who will open the app.
Scenario - what exactly the client will do in it and why it is more convenient for them than chatting.
Connection to your work - where orders go and who processes them.
Support - who will update the catalog and prices and keep an eye on how the app works.
If you do not have answers to these questions yet, it is too early to start with a mini app.
How much does a website or a mini app cost?
A landing page - from $190, a multipage website - from $490. A mini app is a complex project, its price depends on the features and is calculated on request. The article Landing page or multipage website: what your business needs will help you understand which website format to choose.

An order bot collects a request in a structure: product, quantity, address, contact - and passes it straight to the seller. It suits a shop with a small range and repeat purchases. If there are many products and choice needs filters, a chat cannot cope - you need a mini-app or a website.

A mini-app is a web application that opens inside Telegram: an interface, not a conversation. It earns its place where a choice from a catalog, a cart or a personal account is needed, and the audience already sits in Telegram. If bot buttons solve the task, a mini-app is not needed.
